As of today we are no longer using this to post frontpage news on the site. We may still occasionally post here, but you will not need to read this to stay informed about the site. This will most likely turn into a technical blog about various technologies.

October 11th, 20092 issues fixed
October 8th, 2009ok, those two issues are fixed with the contact page. It should now be fully functional.
Back again.
October 6th, 2009Hello there everybody,
Its been a little too long but now we are back since busy season is just about over. To celebrate we redid the contact us/report bug page. It is now all in one form instead of two different pages. Now you no longer need to be signed in to use it. We added a recaptcha on the page if you are not logged in. If you are logged in then you can just fill out the form as usual.
there are two small bugs I will fix in the coming days. 1. After you submit the form it will fill it in again with your submitted values. 2. If you are logged in i don’t think it wont show you the recaptcha like its suppose to, but it also wont let you submit the form then.
Anyway, thanks for using the site, we look forward to this development cycle.

Comments and ratings
June 17th, 2009We worked late into the night last night and hammered out the last of the bugs in our comments and ratings system. It seems to be working pretty good. This will hopefully be that base which we can build several more features, such as:
- Search for highest rated
- Search for easiest rated
- Sort in your recipe box by ratings
- etc.
We do plan to have a full discussion thread for recipes (as needed, and in the future) so the comments are meant to be short comments - 140 characters or less. This is not meant for general discussion. With that in mind you can only rate or comment on any recipe 1 time. Your rating and comment is easily changeable though, should you change your mind.
All that said we hope you enjoy the new feature and take advantage of it as new features to come will be based off of that.
mind.
Thanks

Jquery CharCounter
June 4th, 2009Update #1: I made a small performance change. Now instead of calling the counter 4 times for each keypress it only gets called once. This should help with speeding up typing and should mostly render the delay feature nearly useless. I haven’t fully tested on all browsers though so let me know if you find something. When i’m finished building my feature I will begin testing on all browsers. If i find anythign then I will post again.
Tom Deater from http://www.tomdeater.com/jquery/character_counter/ wrote a nice little plugin for jquery to count the characters of a textbox and limit it to a certain count. Obviously this is just a front end check and a check should also be performed on the back end. In any case his plugin did just about everything we needed it to, here is a quick run down of what he had:
- handles mouse paste/cut
- handles ctrl+ cut and paste
- handles text as typing
- an optional delay for use with large complex pages
- flashing output div
- appends span if container not specified
- configurable output
This was about everything we needed, except we prefer that if you hit your max character count then any keypress should be canceled. This makes it so that a character never shows up and then is quickly removed, as was the case. There are exceptions, you still need to be able to delete characters and use your basic ctrl shortcuts. So we made a small mod, here are the changes:
- List of keys (or key combination’s) that work after max char hit
- ctrl+a
- ctrl+z
- ctrl+x
- ctrl+c
- left arrow
- right arrow
- up arrow
- down arrow
- delete
- backspace
- All other keys are canceled when character count is reached
So that’s basically it.
You can sign up for our website and comment on a recipe (i’m still developing it so depending on when you read this you may not see the option to) to see a demo.
To find out more details or to use a demo without signing up for our site (our site is free by the way, and we have lots of other jquery and jquery ui implementations) you can check out the original sites link. It behaves nearly identical to that.
Were Back
May 19th, 2009We took a little break, we are selling our current house in an attempt to upgrade in the slump. In any case we started setting up a comment and short review tab on the recipes. Hopefully it goes well and we don’t have to scrap the idea. Check back soon to see our progress.
Images
April 30th, 2009We’ve fixed a couple of very small bugs dealing with the images, nothing worth mentioning. In addition we added the images section under “Recipe Collection” so that you can see the most recent image to be uploaded and a random image. From there you can click on the recipe name or the user to get more information. Currently there is only one image, but my wife and I will add some for our recipes as we get time.
Doing this testing revealed a medium sized bug. When a user deletes a created recipe from their recipe box it would make it disappear in the recipe log. This was because it was unassigning the user. To fix this we created a user named “Unassigned” and all recipes that get deleted will then be reassigned to the unassigned user name. Sound complicated? In short you should never truely be able to delete a community recipe (one that you’ve created from scratch) unless your an administrator. If you decide that you don’t want the community to see your recipe (after youve deleted it) you can pm me (thorst) and we will consider removing it. This specifically is for a recipe that was created as an example. We will not remove recipes that are valid just because you dont want to share them.
Thanks all,

Images Done
April 28th, 2009We’ve finished the image upload/cropper on recipes. Feel free to try it out and let us know if something isn’t working. We’ve also updated the calendar page so that you can now click on a recipe and have it take you to the recipe box.
Pictures almost done
April 25th, 2009We’ve got everything built in a testing scenario, and we’ve succesfully tested in all major browsers. We have validated the code. Now all thats left is to clean it up a bit and put it into our live scenario. Hopefully the next time we post it will be to let you know its finished. Check back soon.
Earth Day? -Why you should believe in technology
April 22nd, 2009On this beloved earth day I felt compelled to write a post. I’ve always thought a lot of things when this comes up every year, but never had a complete thought or a place to put it. Now that I have this blog I will make you suffer and give my unrequested opinions.
A little background, I love technology. If you couldn’t guess I spend about 10 hours on a computer every single day, and I don’t really get tired of it. In fact many days I listen to my podcasts about various computer topics in my truck as I’m on my way to and from work. This is an important note because i see technology and being green as closely related. It was my love of technology and efficiency that first drove me to begin researching the prius. I’ve since come to the conclusion that it is in fact the best vehicle created to date. I am a proud stock holder of Toyota, and won’t sell even if the company tanks. The car is simply a great vehicle made by a reliable company, made for the masses, and its all available today… for a great/affordable price.
What does this have to do with earth day? Well after i began researching i began reading all the awesome things that Toyota and other car companies are doing, it naturally led to solar energy. After all the new prius has solar panels, and they will soon be able to be plugged in. Wouldn’t it be sweet if i could I could charge my plug in prius with a battery array that gets charged every day as the sun shines down on my solar panels? I digress.
Technology is the key to efficiency, and efficiency and being green are synonyms. I was raised being taught that the earth is on a cyclical schedule, temperatures rise, they fall, species die, and life goes on. Sure polluting is probably not the healthiest thing, but it doesn’t do any long term damage, maybe a little smog…but if we clean up that will quickly blow away. While i still think the earths weather is cyclical i no longer believe that we aren’t damaging the earth. I now think that while weather may go in cycles we are changing the cycles and therefore may not have a consistent weather pattern for the future. But this opinion (while based on scientific facts) is not the point.
Rather, if we have the technology, we have the know how, why are we to lazy to be better. Regardless of your beliefs on global warming, why are we limiting ourselves by our laziness?
I was having a discussion with my father the other week about cars and what the next fuel source should be. I believe it should be electric for a few simple reasons. If we all drive electric we can:
- Charge from our own power source (wind/solar)
- plug into a grid that can be upgraded as the utility companies need to or are forced to. Instead of the government imposing strict rules on millions of people they can target a specific utility and try to make it more efficient. Whether its limiting nuclear waste, or cleaner coal burners with better exhaust filters. We centralize our efforts on a local area to improve the system. Other areas wont be polluting at all since they receive their electric from water, solar, and wind.
- dump excess electricity from the vehicle back to the grid and save money on our house electric bills
- charge vehicles over night from the grid when there is an excess of power, often this power is wasted or throttled back greatly to limit wasting.
After i said that i think cars will soon generate electricity and be able to dump it back to the grid my dad claimed that vehicles will always consume energy. I still disagree, sure in today’s world they must consume more energy to move through the air, but just 10 years ago (when the prius came out) everyone would have said it wouldn’t work. Batteries die and are costly. But look at where we are. Some of the first sets of batteries are still running, the wind efficiency is so high and being perfected its astounding. Along with many other improvements you can now buy a mid-sized vehicle and have it achieve 50 EPA. That means if your conservative you could see well over 70mpg. Now compare that to the vehicle your driving, yeah 10-20 mpg is disgusting. Yet your vehicle im sure isn’t that old. In such a short amount of time we’ve made amazing progress because we’ve felt like it. Technology costs have come down and advances have been made. Soon we may be able to use solar paint or more efficient roof solar panels etc. Cars will begin to generate electricity even with driving the average 40 miles a day. Earlier i stated that i drive a truck, i should quickly mention that i consistently get between 29-35 mpg. Its a small Toyota pickup simply called pickup. No its not a Tacoma.
Why the emphasis on vehicles? Because i believe that we should be recycling, and many people have been doing this for years. We should be using long lasting light bulbs, but really how much does that save, I’m not convinced that they last as long as they advertise (i know you need to use them differently). I know there are a million ways to be green but really i cant think of one way i pollute more then by driving my vehicle everyday to work. So that’s why im focusing on that.
So to summarize, our opinions of vehicles not contributing to global warming (if global warming exists) is irrelevant. Our excuse that new technology is to expensive is just that. Our attitudes towards efficiency is laughable. We are lazy and greedy and have let big companies go by with lack of innovation. They purchase efficient technologies to store the building plans and theories in a hidden basement 20 stories below ground. Its absurd. I will never buy a vehicle from gm ever again (hope they go under), Chrysler will go under, and ford will need to do a lot to impress me before i purchase from them again. Until im convinced its only Honda or Toyota.
So happy earth day, i hope Ive encouraged you to take hold of your life and put your dollars where your mouth is. Being green is about so much more then saving money, its about being the best we can be, providing a better place to live for our children, simply doing the right thing.
