Earth Day? -Why you should believe in technology

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

On this beloved earth day I felt compelled to write a post. I’ve always thought a lot of things when this comes up every year, but never had a complete thought or a place to put it. Now that I have this blog I will make you suffer and give my unrequested opinions.

A little background, I love technology. If you couldn’t guess I spend about 10 hours on a computer every single day, and I don’t really get tired of it. In fact many days I listen to my podcasts about various computer topics in my truck as I’m on my way to and from work. This is an important note because i see technology and being green as closely related. It was my love of technology and efficiency that first drove me to begin researching the prius. I’ve since come to the conclusion that it is in fact the best vehicle created to date. I am a proud stock holder of Toyota, and won’t sell even if the company tanks. The car is simply a great vehicle made by a reliable company, made for the masses, and its all available today… for a great/affordable price.

What does this have to do with earth day? Well after i began researching i began reading all the awesome things that Toyota and other car companies are doing, it naturally led to solar energy. After all the new prius has solar panels, and they will soon be able to be plugged in. Wouldn’t it be sweet if i could I could charge my plug in prius with a battery array that gets charged every day as the sun shines down on my solar panels? I digress.

Technology is the key to efficiency, and efficiency and being green are synonyms. I was raised being taught that the earth is on a cyclical schedule, temperatures rise, they fall, species die, and life goes on. Sure polluting is probably not the healthiest thing, but it doesn’t do any long term damage, maybe a little smog…but if we clean up that will quickly blow away. While i still think the earths weather is cyclical i no longer believe that we aren’t damaging the earth. I now think that while weather may go in cycles we are changing the cycles and therefore may not have a consistent weather pattern for the future. But this opinion (while based on scientific facts) is not the point.

Rather, if we have the technology, we have the know how, why are we to lazy to be better. Regardless of your beliefs on global warming, why are we limiting ourselves by our laziness?

I was having a discussion with my father the other week about cars and what the next fuel source should be. I believe it should be electric for a few simple reasons. If we all drive electric we can:

  • Charge from our own power source (wind/solar)
  • plug into a grid that can be upgraded as the utility companies need to or are forced to. Instead of the government imposing strict rules on millions of people they can target a specific utility and try to make it more efficient. Whether its limiting nuclear waste, or cleaner coal burners with better exhaust filters. We centralize our efforts on a local area to improve the system. Other areas wont be polluting at all since they receive their electric from water, solar, and wind.
  • dump excess electricity from the vehicle back to the grid and save money on our house electric bills
  • charge vehicles over night from the grid when there is an excess of power, often this power is wasted or throttled back greatly to limit wasting.

After i said that i think cars will soon generate electricity and be able to dump it back to the grid my dad claimed that vehicles will always consume energy. I still disagree, sure in today’s world they must consume more energy to move through the air, but just 10 years ago (when the prius came out) everyone would have said it wouldn’t work. Batteries die and are costly. But look at where we are. Some of the first sets of batteries are still running, the wind efficiency is so high and being perfected its astounding. Along with many other improvements you can now buy a mid-sized vehicle and have it achieve 50 EPA. That means if your conservative you could see well over 70mpg. Now compare that to the vehicle your driving, yeah 10-20 mpg is disgusting. Yet your vehicle im sure isn’t that old. In such a short amount of time we’ve made amazing progress because we’ve felt like it. Technology costs have come down and advances have been made. Soon we may be able to use solar paint or more efficient roof solar panels etc. Cars will begin to generate electricity even with driving the average 40 miles a day. Earlier i stated that i drive a truck, i should quickly mention that i consistently get between 29-35 mpg. Its a small Toyota pickup simply called pickup. No its not a Tacoma.

Why the emphasis on vehicles? Because i believe that we should be recycling, and many people have been doing this for years. We should be using long lasting light bulbs, but really how much does that save, I’m not convinced that they last as long as they advertise (i know you need to use them differently). I know there are a million ways to be green but really i cant think of one way i pollute more then by driving my vehicle everyday to work. So that’s why im focusing on that.

So to summarize, our opinions of vehicles not contributing to global warming (if global warming exists)  is irrelevant. Our excuse that new technology is to expensive is just that. Our attitudes towards efficiency is laughable. We are lazy and greedy and have let big companies go by with lack of innovation. They purchase efficient technologies to store the building plans and theories in a hidden basement 20 stories below ground. Its absurd. I will never buy a vehicle from gm ever again (hope they go under), Chrysler will go under, and ford will need to do a lot to impress me before i purchase from them again. Until im convinced its only Honda or Toyota.

So happy earth day, i hope Ive encouraged you to take hold of your life and put your dollars where your mouth is. Being green is about so much more then saving money, its about being the best we can be, providing a better place to live for our children, simply doing the right thing.

New backups coming

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

Since our last update and partial data loss we thought it would be a good time to add a competent backup solution. Before that we were sorta winging it and were just relying on our raid for a minor hardware failure. That wasn’t our goal to continue that way but at the same time it wasn’t on the top of our list.

Well, now that we’ve woken up we came up with a fairly good solution. Portions of our script have been tested individually, now its a matter of putting it all together and putting it in live. When completed we will have a daily backup both locally and to a remote system. We hope to also implement a incremental backup throughout the day. Thats pretty much been keeping us busy.

New Updates Coming

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Last week we were able to prototype an object for the coming advanced search page. We were also able to prototype a rating system for the recipes. These are both very early renderings of what we will put up, but it is the first step in adding a feature. For example, after our initial list prototype it took about 3 weeks for us to integrate the final rendering into our site. That’s not to say that rating will be done in 3 weeks, but we’re just letting you know its coming.

We also added a multiple category search. This is still being tweaked but should be released this week.

Thanks,

I know it was only a mention because we are using their scripts but the Jquery UI blog mentioned us yesterday. We would like to thank them for their time (both in putting our name on their blog and by creating their scripts) and putting our name out there.

Anyway you can read the post here.

Browser News

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

And the wars continue, IE8 has officailly been released and several updates have been coming out with other browsers as well since december (when we posted last about browsers), so I’ve decided to give some rendering updates.

  • IE 8.0.6001.18702 (Final)- Rendering our site looks good. We haven’t expirienced any display issues. Loading speeds are actually quite quick expecially when compared to IE7. The only thing is when testing with acid3 test it actually got worse since B2. It now tests at 20/100.
  • Opera 10.1139 (Alpha) - Rendering our site looks good. It again feels speedier, but my unofficial testing actially puts IE at a slight speed advantage. However its base rendering standards is much better scoring 100/100 on acid3.
  • Chrome 2.0.169.1 (Beta) -Rendering looks ok. The titles for each section are a little distorted, and the grocery list calendars are on top of each other. However it does get 100/100 on the acid3 test with the exception of the linktest failing.
  • Safari 4.528.16 (Beta)- Redning is the same as chrome above because they use the same rendering engine. Except they completely pass the acid3 test without any errors.

IE8 and nearly finished

Monday, January 12th, 2009

I just got my hands on IE8 rc1. While the rendering looks nearly perfect (with a small header cut off on one end that should be easy to fix, and nobody will notice) it still only recieves a 21 on acid3. This is a little disapointing that they didnt strive to be the firt to release it in a final release. Sure firefox and others would have it shortly after, but it would have made a statement. I guess its not out of the realm of posibilities that it be in the final, but i wouldnt count on any major changes between now and then.

We have officially begun local testing. We have a list of about 10 or so things that need changed currently before we can release it to the public. I do intend on putting it up in the next couple days for live testing. Check back soon..we are almost there.

SVN

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Last night we made some cool feature updates and are just about finished placeholders for the front end. So today we will hopefully have a good portion of the backend up and running. We don’t plan on conquering the world on this first release as long as we can get something running so we can start to really get users and feedback.

This morning i added our current test build to svn, this is an important step for source control. I currently use http://tortoisesvn.net/ though I’m up for suggestions. This will hopefully help us concentrate on implementing one feature at a time and tracking changes so if a bug pops up we can know better where it came in.

Browsers

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Ask any web developer and thier biggest nightmare is dealing with formatting in all browsers. Possibly the most consistent way is to strictly use tables. While browsers still display this differently, it for the most part, will be very similar across all platforms. Consistency does come with a price. Its as flexible as a piece of cold steel. Want to re template your site? Be prepared to redo every line of code you’ve written so far. What a pain!

We are however on the eve of something great. A revolution. A release that will launch the web into the next phase of browsing, and it comes from none other than microsoft. Wait, what? Thats right, microsoft.

For far to long users have been brain washed into thinking IE was the only browser available, and in my opinion it was the best browser to use, free browser that is. But then things changed, opera became free, and mozilla took over. Now firefox is known by all, even if they don’t use it. Google, apple, and opera are all now competing for the best browser award and microsoft is trailing as always. So how will they revolutionize the web you ask?

Microsoft has been losing market share for too long and the big wigs dont like it. With IE8 they’ve finally gotten started on the right track and they can now pass acid2 easily. acid3 looks better than in IE7 though it still doesnt perform anywhere close to any other major browser. With IE8 performming beter it will no doubt bring some customers back. And when that happends, firefox and the others will be back with even better rendering and surfing features.

If your using minefield (like you should be) then you will notice that memory management and rendering speeds are getting better. Two problems that have plagued browsers since they were invented. As developers we are entering an age that we no longer need to design for specific browsers, and tweaking for endless hours to get it to look consistent. We instead can code a site to our best ability and then warn users who choose to use a browser that’s out of date and not up to snuff.

Will IE ever be up to snuff? With IE8 i believe the answer is yes. Sure in comparison (see chart below) it is much worse than the others (and the chart doesn’t even tackle load speeds). But it is much better than IE7 which is much better than IE6. Businesses will soon be able to go to 8 since they’ve primarily been stuck on 6, and that opens the flood gates to better browsing. Sure it will never truely compare but as long as its good enough, we only have to code one site.

Im very optimistic that microsoft will continue to improve IE at a faster pace than in the past and if thats the case (which it needs to be for IE to stay in the game) then we can all be a little bit happier.

Now is one of the best times to be coding a site. So all this stated what are we doing? Like previously said we are developing in Firefox 3. For the second build of the template we’ve checked on all the below browsers and all render good enough. Below is are the details. Please note that the template is 100% complete, id say about 98.5% though.

Opera-100% accurate

Firefox-100% accurate

Chrome-100% accurate

Safari-100% accurate

minefield- small header alignment issue (should be fixed in final)

IE7-significant menu positioning error, same header issue as minefield

IE8-same header issue as minefield, small glitch on google ad (up and down button doesnt display)

All in all IE7 looks the worse and luckily with the timing we shouldn’t need to worry about that. We may try to fix the header issue to appease IE8, minefield, and IE7. That’s all for now, if you have questions about the browsers we use just post a comment and we will try to help you get on the best browser.

Here are my unscientific findings:

minefield 3.1b2pre ->acid2 great, acid3 93/100

Opera 9.62->acid2 great, acid3 85/100

chrome 0.4.154.29 -> acid2 great, acid3 79/100

safari 3.2.1->acid2 great, acid3 75/100

firefox 3.0.4->acid2 great, acid3 71/100

IE 8.0.6001.18241 beta2->acid2 great, acid3 21/100

IE 7.5730.11-> acid2 fails miserably, acid3 12/100
